SCIENTIFIC AGENDA STEERING COMMITTEE (SASC)
The Scientific Agenda Steering Committee (SASC) oversees and coordinates the ACTG's research priorities, scientific agenda, and patient and laboratory resources.
The SASC is responsible for reviewing all concept proposals and determining whether they should proceed to protocol development. The role of the SASC is to prioritize, coordinate, and integrate the planned research within the context of other planned and ongoing studies and to evaluate the availability of patient, clinical, and laboratory resources within the ACTG to conduct the proposed studies. The role of the SASC has been expanded to include the initial review and approval of concept proposals, which are then referred to the relevant Research Agenda Committee to facilitate and oversee protocol development.
The SASC is further responsible for reviewing all protocols as they near the end of the development process to evaluate study design, feasibility, and resource utilization and to make final decisions on behalf of the Executive Committee to implement protocols within the ACTG. The SASC periodically reviews activities related to the timely implementation, conduct, analysis, and publication of results of the studies generated to address the scientific agenda of the ACTG. The SASC also coordinates the efforts of the four RACs and the support laboratories and makes recommendations to the Executive Committee regarding resource allocations among the RACs and the support laboratories. The SASC is chaired by the Vice-Chair of the Executive Committee.
